Gingerbread Adventures in the NY Botanical Garden
Yesterday we had a holiday date at the NY Botanical Garden. We took our son to see the gingerbread houses and the Holiday Train Show (see this link below). The Gingerbread Adventure section was a lot of fun. It was lit up outside with whimsical holiday lights and they have gingerbread play houses for the kids to go inside. Indoors there were beautiful edible ginger bread houses made based upon fairytale themes and characters, decorated by NY bakeries. I’ve pasted a slideshow of those pictures here.
Also inside there is staff to teach about the plants parts that are used to make gingerbread. They teach about the plant based ingredients in ginger bread cookies such as ginger, cinnamon, cloves and sugar and then give out the recipe for ginger bread cookies, which I will post below. There are beautiful decorations and the whole thing is very festive, educational and a lot of fun for the holidays.

I am posting the recipe for Gingerbread cookies here but you could also make a gingerbread house together on a date night if you are inspired!
Gingerbread Cookies Recipe:
2 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
4 oz butter or margarine at room temperature
2/3 cups sugar
1 egg
½ cup of molasses
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2 teaspoons ground ginger
Directions: Sift together flour, baking soda and baking powder. Beat butter and sugar together. Beat in egg, molasses and spices until smooth. Add flour mixture and stir until smooth. Chill. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Roll the dough about 1/8 thick. Cut cookies and place ½ inch apart on parchment lined baking sheets. Bake about 8-10 minutes or longer if cookies are larger than three inches.
