A Romantic Dinner Date at Shalel Lounge in NY

We recently had an early dinner at Shalel Lounge and I’d definitely recommend it as a romantic date spot. We had just come from visiting the Museum of Natural History so we got there around 5:15PM on a Saturday, which turned out to be a great idea. We had the entire place to ourselves! They did not open that day until 4:30 so it might be a good tip to go there early, as I read that it gets super crowded and there can be a wait, plus standing room only. Anyway, we had the run of the place so we could sit by the fountain (see the pic) and explore all the cavernous romantic spots throughout the restaurant. Personally, I am not a foodie so I am just as interested in the ambiance, beauty and originality of a place as I am in the food. Having said this, the food was good.
We ordered a chicken dish that we shared. It was enough for two ($17) and came with lots of pita bread. Our waitress had said that entrée was big enough for two and she was right. We also shared an appetizer of vegetable cigars ($9) and my husband had a beer ($7) and I had a rum and diet coke ($9). So for a NY dinner date, the tab came to $35 before tip. If it’s a first ate and you don’t want to share entrees, you would probably add another $18. For recession minded daters, prices are pretty good for a NYC restaurant, considering the wonderful romantic atmosphere, good food, music and overall experience.
This lounge/restaurant has a cave like feeling with dim lighting, dark brick, candles and rose petals everywhere. There are lots of little architectural surprises like a brick shelf in the wall over our table with a candle. There was a fountain and lots of hidden tables in corners with banquet like booths for larger parties that afford privacy. It reminded me of my visit to Morocco and it definitely felt like you could stay there undisturbed for awhile and escape the bustle of the city. I think most dates would find it very romantic. My husband gave it 8.5 sexy stars out of 10 (our new rating system). So, give it a try for drinks, appetizers or dinner and let us know what you think.
My Best in Love,
Paulette
